so I know that if a model is equipped with a certian item then the rules state the actual model must have a representation of that item equipped, but does it apply in reverse? I found a very cool model which Id like to use as a hag bsb, but the issue it that the model also wields a giant scythe. last I checked hag dont have scythes, but it does have the two hand weapons equipped to it as well... would I be able to get away with this model on the table or not?

99% of the people you play won't have a problem with it.

For characters I generally consider that WYSIWYG does not really apply.  There is simply too much variability to be reasonable.  Different types of armor, shield/no shield, 2 weapons, great weapon, pistol or bow, where are those scrolls, etc etc.  How many different variations do you need?  Way too many!

If you had a unit of dudes with 2 weapons and you called them Halberds, then I would call foul...because it can easily lead to confusion (even if the unit in question cannot have 2 weapons).

So I would say that as long as it is clearly a character, and clearly a BSB, anything else is pretty much fair game.

That is a GW rule, and I'm betting you are looking at a non-GW mini.  In any event you are allowed to use that mini, it shouldn't be a problem.

Typically, not a problem.  In the past, BSB's could not have Great Weapons, anyway.  In the past, Dark Elves were so crappy, no one cared, anyway.  WYSIWYG is definitely an issue if the character HAS a GW, but it is not modeled.  Not so much if the model has what looks to be one, but it’s not.  Still, worth mentioning to the opponent.  Methinks WSYWIG was a bigger issue, in the past.  It really became an issue in the 40K V. 2 days, when there was a myriad of potent weapon/armor/gear combo’s.  Nowadays, in a game that routinely features Star Dragons and Bloodthirsters and such, the phantom scythe on your BSB is probably not high on anyone’s list of grudges.

jest letting the opponent know and maybe reminding him during the game is usually enough to make it ok.

I kind of agree, except that I will forget to remind my opponent during the game.  In fact, I’ll probably forget the model does not have a GW, and my opponent will have to remind me.  Hell, if I don’t have my glasses, WYSIWYG is hit and miss, anyway.

Of course if you are really worried about it - remove the scythe.  Sounds like a good excuse for a little coversion session.

I generally go by the stats for the troop type.
For instance, I have a unit of Dark Eldar warriors that I constructed to have pistols and CCWs.
The stats available to the unit as a whole don't allow that, so i just use the base stats, which means
their pistols and CCWs are treated like a rapid fire rifle. I just think DE warriors look better theme-wise
jumping from a raider with p and CCWs.
